Trunk Notes

It has been over a year since the Trunk Notes personal wiki was released for the iPhone and iPod Touch.

In the past 14 months Trunk Notes has had many significant features added, with more planned for the future.

Trunk Notes started off by offering a powerful alternative to other note taking apps by giving the user the tools needed to create their own personal website right on an iPhone or iPod Touch. Trunk Notes has gained thousands of users and for many of them has become an essential everyday tool.

I wanted to tell iPhone App Index readers about some of the new features that Trunk Notes has gained since it’s release.

The big one is support for dynamic content. You can embed instructions in your notes which Trunk Notes understands and responds to. Ranging from simple instructions such as ‘put the current date here’ or ‘list the last 5 updated notes’, to support for Getting Things Done (GTD). A powerful example of this is the action command. This searches all of your notes for keywords or contexts. {{action @call}} lists all of the phone calls you have to make, {{dueinnext 7, @work}} shows all of the work actions which are to be done in the next 7 days. Trunk Notes supports many such instructions for the ultimate in power and flexibility.

Trunk Notes now includes a convenient backup system and the ability to import notes. The app supports images and sound recordings in addition to text based notes. Notes can be tagged. Bulleted and numbered lists work like they do in a word processor supporting nesting and auto continuation. If you choose, notes can be geo-tagged with the location at which they were created. Giving the user control over how they use the app has been core to the development effort.

Despite being one of the most powerful note taking apps on the iPhone there are many new features in development. A big one, coming in a future version, is support for secure notes. Trunk Notes will allow you to selectively encrypt notes to hide them from prying eyes and to give you confidence that information remains secure in the event of the iPhone being lost or stolen.

Many of the new features mentioned above have been suggested and closely developed in conjunction with the enthusiastic user community. Suggestions and comments are always welcome.
